Excellently Crafted Reality TV Rom-Com
Overdue Book Review --- AMERICA'S NEXT REALITY STAR, by Laura Heffernan
I dove into Laura Heffernan’s debut novel, America’s Next Reality Star, with less than high expectations. Not because of anything to do with the book, or the author. Just because a) I don’t normally read much contemporary romance, and b) I have no interest whatsoever in reality TV.
And darn it, she caught me. The characters were engaging and forced me to care about them. Even the secondary characters had charm and interest. And the story was so well crafted that it sucked me in and wouldn’t let go. There were twists and turns throughout the book that, I have to admit, I never saw coming because I was so caught up in the story.
This book is Ms. Heffernan’s debut, and she deftly manages to avoid many of the pitfalls new authors are prone to tumble into. Her voice is excellent, her pacing and character development are superb, the dialogue is nicely handled, and the story line is so well plotted that it even held this old cynic’s interest, and made me root for Jen all the way through. And, even more importantly, it made me want to read the next book in the series, to see where the characters will go from her.
If you’re a reality TV addict, or adore sweet romance, or just want a fun beach read this summer, this is the perfect book for you.
